Uh oh. End of last week, I felt very intellectually stimulated after a series of talks and meetings: at the World Bank, Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), Public Citizen Global Trade Watch, meetings regarding the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, REDD Readiness Proposal Plans at PC6 in Guyana, the list goes on...
And then, the WC happens, and I feel all intellect dissipate. June 11- July 11 will be the month of unproductivity (this word doesn't actually exist, but now it does) thanks to the World Cup, our planet's best sporting event ever? Chile plays Honduras on Wednesday at 7:30am, then I have a conference from 9-2pm and 7-9pm, and my boss will be in town those 2 days so it will be intense workdays. But then, Argentina plays Korea Thursday morning again at 7:30am. I know its not that crazy a schedule, but from what I'm used to so far (very chill days at work, 8-hour nights) it seems like it will be!
In other thoughts on the World Cup, I wish there was a greater cultural aspect built into it. There's so much that a global event like that could leverage on to showcase a little of every culture, but I guess the thunder should not be stolen from the host country, and of course, the beautiful game itself. The Olympic is arguably a better place for doing that, perhaps. But I still wish. Also, it is now my burning desire to be in Brazil when 2014 rolls around...
So while the NBA Finals Series hardly compares to the grandeur and scale of the World Cup, it is another event which is contributing to my unproductivity. Not sure what got into the Lakers, but they'd better buck up when they play on home ground the next 2 games..
In more serious news, I had my interview with the WWF this morning regarding a second part-time internship for the remaining of the summer. I have my fingers crossed. I am also elated to say that I now have my own place for the last 2 months of my stay in DC- in a beautiful and large house that is in the official registry of historic homes in DC. i.e. come visit me because you will have a place to stay!
